What's it like to be a Business Intelligence Analyst?
Business Intelligence Analysts use data to provide strategic guidance and improve the business performance of an organisation. They are experts in drawing insights out of large amounts of data. Performing mathematical analysis and using creative problem-solving and communication skills are key to the role of a Business Intelligence Analyst. They work for government departments and organisations in a broad range of industries including information & communication technology, finance, professional, scientific and technical services, and wholesale and retail trade.
Tasks and duties
- Using a variety of analytics tools to analyse data and determine business performance.
- Transforming raw data into insights, reports, charts, visualisations and forecasts.
- Working with stakeholders to develop metrics used in performance assessment and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Creating procedures and policies used in the collection and analysis of data.
- Developing new data analysis methods.
- Analysing market and competitor data to support development of new products and services.
- Gathering and analysing data to determine priorities and set workflows.

How to become a Business Intelligence Analyst
A bachelor degree in computer science, business, data science or a related field is usually required to become a Business Intelligence Analyst. Developing advanced skills working with databases and Structured Query Language (SQL) and its related platforms is essential.
- Complete a bachelor degree majoring in computer science, data science, business or a related field. This is usually a three-year course of full-time study.
- Seek out internship or placement opportunities while studying in order to gain practical experience.
- Consider completing additional certifications related to SQL, cloud computing, data analysis and data visualisation.
- Consider completing postgraduate study, such as the Master of Business Administration. This is usually a two-year course of full-time study.
